Celery Seed 15 ml

Apium graveolens

15 ml

With usage dating back as early as 5th century China, celery has become a well-known staple in a variety of dishes. Fresh, in-season celery plants – like those found at local farmer’s markets – grow up to three feet tall, are bright green and radiating with life. Celery is known to have a complex, strong, sweet and spicy aroma. The plant takes two years to fully mature and produce its small fruit, which are tan to brown in colour. The seeds are the primary repository for essential oil, which is extracted using steam distillation.

How does it work?

Celery has a very long growing season (at least 15 months) and has a low tolerance for heat, cold and drought. Since it is a biennial plant, meaning it won't flower until the second year, it is planted early in spring and harvested in early summer of the following year.

Before harvesting, the plants are allowed to flower and go to seed. The seeds dry and turn a greyish-tan colour when they are ready to harvest. The dried seeds can fall off the plant with the slightest breeze, so they require vigilant monitoring to ensure they are harvested at just the right moment.

After harvesting, the seeds are crushed and steam distilled to produce doTERRA Celery essential oil.
